Coaching Youth, Transforming Lives

Participating in youth sports at the Y can transform lives-both for youth participants and for coaches. Y volunteers who give their time and talents as youth sports coaches are in a position to help young athletes develop relationships and a sense of achievement and belonging, making a positive impact on their lives for years to come.

Three ways YMCA youth sports transform lives:

  • Impart good habits that last a lifetime. Coaches help youth develop necessary social-emotional skills, build strong character and recognize the importance of healthy eating and physical activity.

  • Foster a sense of community and teamwork. Being a part of a team fosters belonging-a necessity for successful youth development and an important component of well-being for adults.

  • Make learning fun. Youth coaches at the Y don't need to be sports experts or former athletes. All that is required is a commitment to helping children learn new skills, make new friends and have fun!
