Health and Wellness        

The South County YMCA strives to offer excellence in fitness facilities and programming. Our staff is dedicated to helping all that we serve through communication with members and identifying the individual needs of each health seeker.

The South County YMCA provides a variety of health and wellness programs, including land and water fitness classes for individuals of all ages.  We provide members and families health and wellness seminars, educational classes, personalized training programs, non-competitive youth and adult sports leagues and social opportunities for seniors and families.

This all-inclusive approach is what sets the YMCA apart from your typical fitness facility.

  • Equipment Orientations

    Meet with a certified YMCA fitness staff member to show you how to properly use our Nautilus and cardio equipment. This is a free benefit to members. Sign up for a free appointment at the Welcome Desk. Members who are beginning a workout plan can sign up for several follow-up appointments for the support they need to feel comfortable utilizing the YMCA fitness facilities.

  • Wellness Consultation

    Meet with a certified YMCA wellness staff member to discuss your wellness goals and make a plan to utilize your Y membership to achieve those goals! This is a free benefit for members. Sign up at the start of your membership, whenever your workout plan needs a boost or whenever your wellness needs change.

  • Group Exercise Classes

    FREE program, open to YMCA members only
    The South County Y offers over 50 group exercises classes per week, including Yoga, Pilates, Step, Sculpt, CardioCamp, Silver Sneakers, Nia, Group Cycle and MORE! (see our "schedules" section for class descriptions, days and times). Our instructors are committed to providing a safe and effective workout for all participants - beginners through conditioned athletes are welcome!    

    Yoga

     A series of asanas, or postures, form the foundation of the practice that connects movement with breath, enhancing flexibility and muscle tone throughout the body. The benefits of yoga include reduced stress, strengthened nervous system, improved health and relaxation. Please see the group exercise schedule for details.

    Pilates

     Focusing on core strength in the torso, abdomen and spine, this mind-body conditioning class uses stretching, strengthening and breathing exercises to tone muscles, increase flexibility, and improve posture and balance. Please see the group exercise schedule for details.

    Qi-gong


    Learn to cultivate the life energy within your body and awaken your inner healer! Created by Taoist monks 3000 years ago, this ancient Asian Health Science will help to create a spontaneous balancing and natural healing on the human system. Through subtle but powerful movements, combined with breathing techniques, Qi-gong can have a profound and positive effect on your overall health and well being.                                                     Back to top

    Women on Weights

    Learn the fundamentals and benefits of weight training as well as safety and technique when using free weights.

    GROUP FITNESS CLASSES

    FREE to drop in anytime. Open to YMCA members only
    Offered in our Personal Fitness Center, and led by YMCA Fitness Instructors: These classes incorporate the use of the Nautilus and/or Cardio Machines, providing guidance and encouragement through an action-filled interval-style workout. Check the PFC bulletin board daily for our "30-minute Boredom Busters".

    SUMMER WELLNESS PROGRAMS

    Writing Diet Weight Loss Support Group

     Using the principles and practices from “The Writing Diet” by Julia Cameron, participants will engage in guided writing exercises that help them examine their eating issues and find life-long solutions. Participants must purchase The Writing Diet by Julia Cameron

    Novelist Boot Camp

    Are you over 40 and still waiting to write that book? This is the summer you do it. Take this 12-week class and work out the structure, plotline, characters and setting of your novel with the support of others who have also got a story to tell. Participants must purchase Novelist Boot Camp by Todd A. Stone.

    Unblock Your Creativity

    Creativity is part of a balanced, healthy lifestyle. This intensive course uses a spiritual approach to help participants unleash creative power in various forms of writing, visual arts or music. Participants must purchase The Artists’s Way by Julia Cameron



  • Personal Training

    Work with a certified YMCA Personal Training Instructor to develop an exercise program that focuses on your individual health concerns and unique fitness goals. Personal attention and individualized instruction throughout each session will help you to achieve the personal objectives you set. One-hour training sessions are available in 1,3,6,12, and 15-session packages.   • Cancer Survivor Programs

    LiveStrong Starting Over

     This exercise program is designed for those who have or have had breast cancer. Participants will learn flexibility and strengthening exercises for parts of the body affected by the cancer and cancer treatment. Cardiovascular exercises are also featured to improve endurance. Special relaxation techniques will enhance feelings of well-being and renewal. Participants find moral support with other breast cancer survivors in this group setting. Created by a YMCA breast cancer survivor and led by certified YMCA exercise instructors.

    LIVESTRONG at the YMCA

    FREE to Members and Program Members  
    A program of the YMCA and The Lance Armstrong Foundation and a Cancer Survivorship Program of Stanford University

    A 12-week small group series designed for adult cancer survivors who have recently become de-conditioned or chronically fatigued from their treatment and/or disease. The goal is to help build muscle mass and strength, increase flexibility and endurance, and improve functional ability.
    Additional goals include reducing the severity of side effects, preventing unwanted weight changes, and improving energy levels and self esteem. A special wellness component at the
    end of class helps to rejuvenate and reduce stress. Participants also gain moral support from fellow participants as they each move at their own pace. A final goal of the program is to assist participants in developing their own physical fitness program so they can continue to practice a healthy lifestyle. The program meets 2 times per week for 1.5 hours without cost to the participant thanks to generous contributions of individual donors. Instructors are trained in the elements of cancer, post rehab exercise, nutrition, and supportive cancer care.                                                                                 Back to top

  • Teens in the Fitness Center

    Members age 13 and over are welcome to use our cardio and Nautilus fitness equipment after a free equipment orientation with one of our certified YMCA fitness staff. Members age 16 and up are welcome to utilize our free weights area.

  • Youth in the Fitness Center

     Youth ages 9-12 are welcome to use our fitness center with a parent present after they have completed one session of Group Exercise Training for Youth. This four-week course, taught by our certified YMCA fitness staff teaches youth the fundamentals of developing and maintaining a healthy workout routine as well as safety and technique when strength training. Registration is required for this course and there is a fee.
