Active Older Adults

Our “senior” members are an important and integral part of the Cranston YMCA’s community; in fact our “Early Morning Crowd” is a community in itself!  As we enter a new era where more members of our population are aging, yet very active, the Cranston YMCA wants to create programs that are beneficial to maintaining healthy lifestyles in that age group.

For more information on Cranston Y Senior Programs, please choose one of the following areas:

  • Water Exercise

Our Aqua Fit Class is held in the shallow end of the pool, so no worries if you are a non-swimmer! This class provides fun and companionship while improving your fitness level.  Participants will perform exercises in the water to develop strength and flexibility.

Deep Water Aqua Fit provides more of a challenge for those wishing to develop endurance in addition to strengthening the entire body. This class is held in the deep end of the pool, utilizing floatation belts.

The Arthritis Foundation YMCA Aqua Program is approved and recommended by the Arthritis Foundation for individuals living with arthritis. The low-intensity exercises performed help improve circulation while improving range of motion and building strength. This class is held in the shallow end of the pool and is also recommended to individuals recovering from injury or surgery (with written approval from your doctor).

  • SilverSneakers

The Silver Sneakers Program is offered at the Cranston YMCA for seniors that are on Medicare and enrolled in Humana Health Insurance. Seniors that are Humana Gold Choice PFFS members are eligible to receive a free membership to the YMCA. As with all our members, SilverSneaker members will enjoy all the Y has to offer! For more information, contact our membership coordinator, Eui-Ran Lee at elee@gpymca.org.

  • Group Exercise

The Cranston YMCA, in conjunction with the Cranston Senior Center, offers gym and swim for our Active Older Adult members. Classes are held at the YMCA two times per week and include a low-intensity aerobic class and water exercise. Registration is at the Cranston Senior Center.

  • Arthritis Exercise

The Arthritis Foundation YMCA Aqua Program is approved and recommended by the Arthritis Foundation for individuals living with arthritis. The low-intensity exercises performed help improve circulation while improving range of motion and building strength. This class is held in the shallow end of the pool and is also recommended to individuals recovering from injury or surgery (with written approval from your doctor).
