YMCA of Greater Providence

OUT OF SCHOOL TIME

LEARN. ACHIEVE. GROW.

The YMCA of Greater Providence offers before and after school Out of School Time (OST) programming for children in kindergarten through middle school. Most programs are available right at the child’s school, and a few programs are held at our branches in Rhode Island and southeastern Massachusetts. Programs held at the Y offer transportation to and from the child’s school.

The goal of the Out of School Time program is to give all children the opportunity to be the best they can be; to build confident children today who will be contributing and engaged adults tomorrow. Children watch and absorb knowledge, skills and values from everyone and everything around them. All of our Out of School Time programs are staffed by people who understand the need for children to learn new skills, make new friends, be physically active, and succeed in school. The staff works hand-in-hand with school faculty to align the programs with the classroom curriculum.

Focus on Youth Development

At the YMCA of Greater Providence, we believe that all children deserve the opportunity to learn and cultivate values, skills and relationships that lead to positive behaviors, healthy lifestyles and academic achievement. Safety First

As a parent, you can be assured that the safety of children in our care is of paramount importance. We utilize a rigorous screening and orientation process. All staff members are trained in the recognition and prevention of child abuse, and every full or part-time YMCA employee must adhere to an established code of conduct.

Promoting Achievement and Growth

The Out of School Time curriculum focuses on impacting the academic, emotional, and physical development of each child. Core components of the curriculum include the academic, emotional, and physical development of each child. Core components of the curriculum include the following:
Academic Support
YMCA staff works closely with a child’s school to create the best academically-aligned program for the child. Activities may focus on improving reading levels, assisting with homework projects, and developing time management skills. Games and enrichment activities promote learning while having fun.

Health and Wellness

The Out of School Time staff emphasizes the importance of a healthy spirit, mind and body. Through the Y’s unique “Kids on the Move” program, the well-being of each student is woven into the daily curriculum. Children learn the benefits of good nutrition and healthy food choices while enjoying nourishing snacks. They also learn stress management techniques through engaging and fun activities, and participate in numerous games to keep them physically active.

Creative Arts

Children explore and develop creativity and self-expression through drama, dance and mixed media art activities.

Performance Evaluations

Throughout the year, YMCA staff provides parents with performance evaluations to help monitor their child’s progress in key areas. Because the staff works in unison with a child’s teacher to align Out of School Time with classroom learning, parents receive a more complete picture of their child’s academic and social progress.
