YMCA of Greater Providence partners with Lance Armstrong Foundation
February 21, 2008
Initiative will result in new programs for cancer survivors.
The Bayside Family YMCA and Eastside/Mt. Hope YMCA, branches of the YMCA of Greater Providence, were selected for two of the ten slots among YMCAs from across the country to participate in this unique joint venture to develop better services for cancer survivors.
The project is the result of a multi-year partnership between YMCA of the USA and the
Lance Armstrong Foundation launched last fall to respond to the growing body of
evidence that physical activity can improve the quality of life for cancer survivors, lessen
the impact of treatment side effects, and help them in their recovery.
At the conclusion of the pilot phase of the program, it is expected that cancer survivors will feel understood and supported at the YMCA, will be able to participate in programs, clubs, activities, and events designed specifically for them, will interact with staff who are skilled in leading physical activity programs for cancer survivors, and will encounter YMCA environments to ensure their safety, privacy, and respect.
“We are so excited that two branches of the YMCA of Greater Providence have been selected as part of this national pilot,” said Karen Leslie, President and CEO of the YMCA of Greater Providence. “The results of this work will mean a world of difference to cancer survivors here and around the country.”
The initiative is a key component of Activate America, the YMCA’s bold approach to directly addressing our nation’s growing health crisis. Through Activate America, YMCAs are shifting how they focus their work inside and outside their facilities to engage health seekers in the pursuit of health and well-being through continuous supportive relationships and environments.
