Funds support expanded afterschool programs in West Warwick.
The YMCA of Greater Providence received a grant of $12,240 from Cox Charities New England to support the 21st Century Community Learning Center at Deering Middle School in West Warwick.
This grant allows the YMCA to expand the reach of the Out of School Time program at this site which provides academic enrichment opportunities for at-risk students during non-school hours.
With this funding, the curriculum will now include intensive studying and test-taking skills for 150 students. These two skills are critical to students’ academic success but are often overlooked in day-to-day classroom instruction.
The program is designed to help students meet state and local standards in core academic subjects, such as reading and math, while offering a broad array of enrichment activities that can complement their regular academic programs.
The goal of the program is to help students develop the skills to tackle the more complex work facing them in high school and beyond.
