Amica Insurance Sponsors Splash Week at Local YMCAs
March 10, 2009
Water safety for children and families is focus of activities across the state.
During the week of April 13-17, the YMCA of Greater Providence will offer swimming and water safety instruction for children and adults. Seven Y branches across the state will provide courses based on a national curriculum created by YMCA of the United States.
Amica Companies Foundation has been the primary sponsor of YMCA Splash Week in the area since 2001 based on a shared commitment to the safety, health, and well-being of our youth.
“We are so pleased to have Amica’s continued support in providing water safety instruction to the community,” said YMCA of Greater Providence President & CEO Karen Leslie. “With Splash Week, Amica and the YMCA are working together to ensure that children and families have the tools to enjoy the summer safely.”
The program takes place in three phases:
- First, to gear up for Splash Week, each YMCA branch will adopt a school for water safety instruction targeted at second graders. YMCA Aquatics staff will provide hands-on lessons in the classroom and leave children with take-home activities so the whole family can learn about water safety. At the same time, students will be invited to come to their local Y for Splash Week.
- Strategically scheduled during school vacation, Splash Week makes the most of this time out of school by teaching young people and their parents to be safer and feel more confident in recreation activities involving the water.
- Finally, as summer draws nearer, YMCA staff will work with the schools they have adopted to provide additional water safety instruction either in the classroom or at the YMCA branch.
