America On the Move Week with the YMCA
SEPTEMBER 20-27, 2008

You can be healthy. It starts with two simple steps.

America On the Move Week with the YMCA is a nationwide event to inspire individuals and families to incorporate healthy activities into their daily routines.

The message for America On the Move Week with the YMCA is to move more and eat healthfully by making two small daily changes — taking 2,000 more steps (the equivalent of about one mile) and eating 100 fewer calories. Research from the America On the Move Foundation shows that these small changes will make a difference.

Here's what's happening at your local YMCA:

Bayside Family YMCA

The Bayside Family YMCA will promote the Passport to Health. Participants will join in a series of physical and nutritional activities to collect stamps for their “passport” and earn prizes for their accomplishments.

Bayside Member Service and Wellness Center staff will be ready and available to provide individuals with a free health assessment and help them set goals to improve their well-being.

And to take those 2,000 more steps, America On the Move signs will be set out along the East Bay bike path, guiding participants to their fitness goals.

Cranston YMCA

The Cranston YMCA will set out their 2,000 steps at the Hugh B. Bain Middle School, just down the block. On September 20, registered participants will receive a free pedometer to track their steps and monitor their fitness goals. YMCA staff will be there to provide support, guidance, and motivation.

East Side/Mt. Hope YMCA

Community members are invited to participate in classes during the last two weeks of September as we promote America on the Move Week.

During the week of September 20, members and community members will be invited to try out classes, take a Health Assessment and meet with YMCA staff for one-on-one consultations that will help them meet their fitness goals.

Family Night will be held on September 26. Family Fit Camp, Family Martial Arts Night and Family Water Fitness are just of few of the family-focused options offered during the week.

Everyone who signs up for America on the Move Week at the YMCA will receive a t-shirt and pedometer.

Kent County YMCA

Kent County YMCA will be holding its Annual America On the Move Wellness Challenge.

Participants will raise money for Kent's Financial Assistance Fund by counting their steps during America On the Move Week. The Financial Assistance Fund provides help to children and families who otherwise would not be able to participate in YMCA programs including child care and camp.

Any physical activity may be translated into steps - swimming, aerobics, yoga. Prizes will be awarded to the biggest fundraisers.
