Frequently Asked Questions
What are the hours of Camp? - The regular camp day runs from 8:30am – 4:40pm. Our extended care program begins at 6:30am and ends at 6:00pm.
What should my child bring to Camp each day? - Campers should bring a backpack to and from camp each day. In the backpack should be:
¨ a lunch including a drink
¨ a towel
¨ bathing suit
¨ sunscreen and bug spray
¨ snacks
¨ a water bottle
All items should be marked with the camper's name.
How should my child dress for Camp? - We spend 100% of our day outdoors. You child should come to camp each day dressed for the weather. Always send your child in appropriate foot wear. Closed toed sneakers or hiking boots are best. Sandals and flip-flops are not appropriate for camp. You may also choose to send your child with water shoes to wear in the pond.
Will my camper get as dirty as you say? - Yes! Your camper will get dirty. This is a 100% OUT-OF-DOORS camp, which means that unless it is thundering and lightening or the temperature is unsafe, we will be outside. You will want to BATHE your camper every night and do a quick check for creepy critters like ticks, etc.
What happens if it rains at Camp? - We do operate on rainy days. Most activities on rainy days take place inside different pavilions located around camp. The younger camper’s activities are located inside the Champlin Lodge. However, campers should be prepared with proper rain gear for transitions to and from program areas. Please send camper with a raincoat, extra clothing and footwear.
Who are the camp counselors? - The Camp Ok-Wa-Nessett counselor staff is mature, enthusiastic and diverse. Most are college students studying education, psychology and social work. They are carefully selected for those qualities of leadership, personal values and caring that enable them to relate to and motivate young people. The counselor staff is closely supervised by leadership staff of knowledgeable and dedicated YMCA professionals.
What are the counselor to camper ratios? - The counselor-to-camper ratio depends of what age your child is. The ratios are listed below:
