Newman YMCA Meeting the Needs of ALL
With support from a Quality of Life grant from the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation, the Newman YMCA is continuing its efforts to make the branch fully accessible and welcoming to all people including those with mobility challenges, spinal cord injuries and paralysis.
The Newman Y makes every effort to include any adult or child that would like to participate in YMCA membership. For members who are facing physical limitations due to multiple sclerosis, stroke, spinal cord injuries, paralysis or other mobility limiting issues a grant from the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation in 2009(is this date correct) made it possible for the Y to purchase the Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) bike developed by Restorative Therapies. FES is a well-established rehabilitation technique that uses pulses of electrical current to stimulate peripheral nerves evoking muscle contractions and patterned muscle activity. FES creates patterned movement in arms, legs and trunk; and enables muscles to work and perform activities even though the muscles may be weak or paralyzed through neurological disease or injury.
In the warmer weather a wheelchair accessible nature trail provides opportunities for all to engage with the natural environment with mobility devices.
Additionally the Newman Y offers the TRAILBLAZERS PROGRAM. This full-inclusion camp is designed for children in grades 2 through 8, who have been identified through their Individual Education Plan (IEP) as having social, emotional, physical, and educational needs. For more information call the Y.
